Scottish Portrait Award

The Scottish Portrait Awards ask shortlisted artists if they would like to make a short film to introduce themselves and their practice to a wider audience.

I thought I’d have a wee go at it so here I am! It was actually a lot of fun making it, and thank you to @kgphotozone and my oldest son @camerongillanders for filming me in the limited space in my darkroom. It was cozy!

I used the film to introduce myself at a talk to some students recently and a few people asked who commissioned the projects I work on, and the answer to that, is me. I realised very early on in my career that I wanted immersion in the projects I undertook and that nobody would pay me to indulge in this way.

As anyone who knows me well will confirm, in addition to the occasional photography commission, I’ve always got side hustles. Side hustles that are their own magical adventures. Opportunities to learn new skills. Meet new people. Discover more about myself and life. As the projects evolve I will try and publish and exhibit the work, or try for grant funding. Its a challenge. Never a struggle – just keep at it and something will work. Even if that’s redirection.

Thanks for watching 🙏🏽
