SCOTLAND 2008: VARIOUS LOCATIONS: In 2008 my project on knife crime in Glasgow won a Getty Images Grant for Editorial Photography. ??When the initial work was first published in Glasgow there was a lot of heated debate over the newspapersÕ decision to publish graphic images and it became clear that some people didn't engage with the work for this reason. I decided to re-visit the project, and explore a different approach to present the same story. ??My aim was to make people aware of the savage and brutal violence which is part of everyday life in my home city. I had already spent several years making a photo essay which attempted to get as close to the issue as possible, however, I now took a step back from this and tried to make a complementary series of images which were less graphic in content, but equally powerful. ??To do this I picked a series of murder scenes and visited each with a simple Holga camera. I made a series of photographs of the environment where each dreadful event occurred and when printing the images I combined them with text from court transcripts and newspaper articles.(Photo by David Gillanders) www.davidgillanders.com

“uncivilised” is a series of photographs of the environment where murders have occurred, combined with text from court transcripts and newspaper articles of the bare facts of each unimaginable event.
