uncivilised

About the story

In 2008 my project on knife crime in Glasgow won a Getty Images Grant for Editorial Photography. When the initial work was first published there was a lot of heated debate over the newspapers’ decision to publish graphic images and it became clear that some people didn’t engage with the work for this reason. I decided to re-visit the project, and explore a different approach to present the same story. I took a step back from my initial approach and tried to make a complementary series of images which were less graphic in content, but equally powerful.

“uncivilised” is a series of photographs of the environment where murders have occurred, combined with text from court transcripts and newspaper articles of the bare facts of each unimaginable event.
